Podkrkonoše Symphony Orchestra
The Podkrkonoše Symphony Orchestra returns to Turnov with a programme marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Under the baton of Marek Müller, conductor of the Central Music of the Army of the Czech Republic, there will be Bohuslav Martinů’s Lidice Memorial, Max Bruch’s Kol nidrej for cello and orchestra, in which Klára Gabryšová will take the solo part, and William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1 “Afro-American”, which the orchestra will probably perform in its Czech premiere.
Marek Müller
(*1990) studied piano and conducting at the Teplice Conservatory. He made his debut as a conductor with the North Bohemian Philharmonic Teplice. He was artistic director of the Brixi Chamber Ensemble Teplice and second conductor of the Škoda Auto Wind Orchestra. Since 2016 he has been the choirmaster of the Ještěd Choir and since 2023 he has been the conductor of the Central Music of the Army of the Czech Republic with the rank of captain, where he collaborates with leading Czech soloists.
Turnov
The town of Turnov became one of the strongholds of the national revival and Czech cultural efforts in the 19th century. The revivalist associations, i.e. theatre, music ensembles, the unity of Sokol and others, were often founded only a few weeks after the Prague organisations. The first of these was the Singers’ Association, unofficially functioning before the proclamation of the freedom of assembly in 1860. A number of prominent personalities of our and world cultural life passed through Turnov or worked there – Antonín Dvořák went to his summer apartment in Sychrov, Josef Bohuslav Foerster to Valdštejn. It can be said that the cultural background of the town has always been rich and strong, and many of the current events and festivals that take place in Turnov today grow out of it. In the month of June, the annual Dvořákv Turnov and Sychrov music festivals are held, which also gave rise to today’s Dvořák Festival. The first edition was held in April 1951 on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of Antonín Dvořák’s birth and the 90th anniversary of the Singing Society, now the Antonín Dvořák Choir. A commemorative plaque was unveiled at Sychrov and every year Antonín Dvořák’s stays in our region and the compositions that were created there are remembered. Turnov, the centre of the Bohemian Paradise, is a place with a number of remarkable cultural monuments and a starting point for excursions into the beautiful countryside. The Museum of Bohemian Paradise is worth a visit, as is the remarkable project In the Footsteps of Albrecht von Wallenstein. In the surroundings there are a large number of natural monuments and historical attractions – rock towns, which are also a paradise for climbers, caves, castles, chateaux (the closest is the Hrubý Rohozec Chateau) and folk architecture (Dlaskův statek), etc. Come to Turnov, you are warmly welcome.
