Bojanov

Bojanov is located in the district of Chrudim, in the Pardubice Region. It has 649 inhabitants and the village consists of eight local districts – Bojanov, Horní Bezděkov, Hořeleč, Hůrka, Holín, Petrkov, Kovářov and Hrbokov. Bojanov itself lies in the valley of the Chrudimka River between the Seč and Křižanovice reservoirs, at an altitude of 428 metres. On 10 October 2006 the village was restored to the status of a municipality.

The first written mention of Bojanovo dates back to 1129, when it was the property of the Benedictine monastery in Vilémov. From 1329 it belonged to the estate of Henry of Lichtenberg, but in the 15th century it became part of Oheb Castle. Since 1564, the present-day town has been listed as a town with its own coat of arms – a silver sword and a silver key in a red field. The historic buildings with the rectory and the church of St. Vitus, situated in the shape of a square, underline the town’s character.

The village flourished at the beginning of the 20th century, especially during the First Republic, when a new burgher school was built here in 1932. After 1950, due to the planned construction of another dam on the Chrudimka River, a building closure was declared for both Bojanov and Bezděkov. Today, the village can develop freely again.

Bojanov was an important centre of spiritual administration. In the 14th century, a wooden church was built on the site of the original fortress, which was replaced by a Baroque building with a crypt and rich fresco decoration depicting the legend of the life of St. Vitus, the patron saint of the church, after a fire in 1730. The large fresco above the organ depicts angels playing period instruments. The organ itself, built by Ignác Horák in 1809, is very rare and has been preserved in almost its original form. Restoration is currently underway – information about the public collection and adoption of the pipes can be found at www.varhanybojanov.cz.
